Power Outage Silences Amarillo Stations

More than 2,500 Xcel Energy customers in Amarillo were without power for about two hours Monday morning because of a transmission malfunction, according to amarillo.com.

Some 2,764 customers were affected by the problem with a transmitter about 5 a.m.

All three local TV stations were affected during morning news shows, and KFDA-TV NewsChannel 10 was among the customers that lost power.

“The Cherry Street Substation feeds power to the transmitters for the several TV and radio stations, and also station power for KFDA,” according to a power company spokesperson. “The downtown studios of KAMR and KVII had power, but likely had issues with their transmitters up north.”

Two radio stations, KGNC-FM 97.9 and KXGL-FM 100.9 The Eagle, also experienced outage issues. KGNC morning show DJ Melissa Bartlett said the station went off air as it went to its first break, and after a call to their engineer they realized what happened.

“We basically answered calls and explained to listeners what happened,” Bartlett explained. “We continued with our show like normal and streamed it on Tune-In Radio and waited until we could come back.
