NYC Radio: Homeless Man Sought In Beating of WINS Anchor

The 1010 WINS anchor found savagely beaten in his Upper East Side apartment building Monday night was beaten by his homeless male friend, police sources told The NYPost Wednesday.

52-year-old Brian Carey was pummeled around 11 p.m. Monday, suffering a broken jaw, facial fractures and a deep gash, the sources said.

Carey, whose voice is familiar to millions of news junkies who listen to 1010 WINS, staggered downstairs and collapsed in the lobby.

Police found him semi-conscious. His wallet and cell phone were missing.

Carey was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was unable to talk to investigators at first because of his shattered jaw.

But Tuesday night, the newsman started communicating with detectives and gave several different accounts.  “He first said it was a robbery,” said one police source. “Then he said he knew the guy.” Carey ID’d his attacker to cops, who are now searching for the suspect.

Carey has been a fixture at the “most-listened to station in the nation” for more than a decade, and currently anchors the weekday “afternoon drive” newscasts from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  He’s also heard across the country on the ABC Radio Networks.

Carey is a Nanticoke, PA native who got his first job at WNAK 730 AM “not so much because of his talent but rather because he agreed to also cut the grass,” according to his profile on 1010 WINS’ website.

He got a part-time job with WBRE 1340 AM while attending King’s College and became the news director at WILK 980 AM Radio in his 20s.

He became anchor of an hour-long evening newscast for WARM 590 AM and was the morning anchor for WMGS Magic 93 FM before moving on to anchoring jobs in Philadelphia and then NYC.
