The Monkees Unveil Summer Tour

The 24-date road trek has been dubbed, A Midsummer's Night With The Monkees, and kicks off on July 15th, at Port Chester, New York's Capitol Theatre and eventually winds down a little over a month later on August 18th at Portland, Oregon's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

As with last winter's 12-date mini-tour, Mike Nesmith will once again join surviving members Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork for his second Monkees tour since 1997. Davy Jones died of a heart attack on February 29th, 2012 at age 66.

Micky Dolenz spoke about the band hitting the road for two years in a row, telling Rolling Stone: "The reaction to the last tour was euphoric. It was pretty apparent there was a demand for another one. . . I can be frank and tell you we are thinking about taking it everywhere. There's always been interest in Japan, Eurasia and Australia and New Zealand. There's a huge fan base in South America and Brazil in specific, which we've never really tapped into. There's also talk about Europe and the U.K."

Dolenz touched upon the fact that although Nesmith has stayed away from all but one of the Monkees reunion tours since 1986, his songs have always been heavily featured in the show: "We always kept his songs in the setlist. But when he sings the leads it brings a whole different feel and dynamic to the band. . . The two of us had such a nice blend on those early records. It was two-part harmonies like the Everly Brothers."

He revealed that unlike the 2012 concerts, which paid homage to Davy Jones throughout the show, this time out, the memorials will be somewhat scaled back, explaining, "This time we probably won't lean so heavily on the David situation. I think we have to move on. Everybody has to move on. He'll always be remembered and acknowledged, but possibly not as much as on that particular tour. We will, of course, still perform 'Daydream Believer' and all the other hits."

Dolenz wouldn't rule out the possibility of the Monkees regrouping for their first studio set since 1996's Justus, saying, "I'd love to make a new one. We haven't had any discussions about that beyond, 'Wouldn't it be cool to have a new one?' We're just taking this whole thing one step at a time."
