Former WFLA-Ch. 8 (Tampa) health reporter Irene Maher wrote
an amazing story for Sunday's newspaper detailing the decision by a former
colleague -- David Grant, WFLA's onetime chief meteorologist -- to stop
chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer.
It's the kind of decision you don't hear much about,
especially involving such a public personality. But Grant, who was always an
affable and energetic presence on local TV, delivers his decision with that
same good natured charm in a video which was sent to friends and family.
Maher describes visiting Grant with another WFLA alum,
ex-forecaster Laura York, and being amazed at how much Grant and his wife
Beverly still thought of others while describing the toughest decision any
couple might face. Grant was at WFLA for 23 years, retiring in 1999 just as
social media and the recession were redefining local media for everyone.
Maher wrote: "Three-quarters of patients die within a
year of diagnosis; some last just weeks. Grant feels lucky to have had time to
get his affairs in order and plan his funeral.”
