6/3 WAKE-UP CALL: Bragg Considers Prison for Trump

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg won the biggest bet of his career last week when a jury convicted Donald Trump.
Bragg now has the option of making sentencing recommendations to the judge, but the choice comes with a risk of blowback: He could feel pressure from some of his Democratic constituents who see it as a rare shot to hold Trump accountable, while seeking a tough sentence could inflame his critics who believe Bragg targeted the presumptive Republican nominee for political reasons.

➤U-S PUSHING PEACE PLAN:  American officials are seeking to stop the war through a cease-fire proposal backed by President Biden, while also joining talks this weekend to reopen the Rafah crossing, a crucial aid route into the enclave from Egypt. Even if those talks prove successful, hurdles would remain to getting aid flowing through the crossing, including fighting and lack of security in the area.

The cease-fire efforts also face significant headwinds, with Hamas militants likely to demand guarantees of their survival as leaders in Gaza and far-right members of Israel's ruling coalition threatening to withdraw from the government if a deal comes before Hamas's elimination.

➤RUSSIA POUNDS UKRAINE'S SECOND CITY: Russia aims to make life unlivable in Ukraine’s second city. Ukrainian forces have halted Russia’s advance north of Kharkiv, but the city remains in Moscow’s crosshairs. Ukrainian and Western officials say Russia appears to be planning a grinding war of attrition to empty it of its population. Moscow tried to foment a revolt in the predominantly Russian-speaking city in 2014 and reached its outskirts in 2022. Now, with the war in its third year, Russia is targeting Kharkiv’s energy infrastructure and battering the city with missiles and guided bombs while trying to push its artillery back in range.

➤MEXICO ELECTS FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT: Claudia Sheinbaum was elected Mexico’s first female president in a landslide on Sunday, an official quick-count of votes showed, cementing the dominance of the left-leaning Morena movement that over the past six years has upended the country’s political establishment.  Her victory stunned an opposition that’s expressed fear about the weakening of the country’s democratic institutions. At least five exit polls showed Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, winning the presidency, with pollster Parametria forecasting a landslide 56% of the vote for the ruling MORENA party candidate. Parametria forecast opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez taking 30% of the vote.

➤BIDEN ADMIN OFFERS MASS AMNESTY: While the Biden administration is attempting to look like it’s getting tough on the border, behind the scenes it’s operating a program of a “mass amnesty” for migrants, The Post reports. Data shows that since 2022, more than 350,000 asylum cases filed by migrants have been closed by the US government if the applicants don’t have a criminal record or are otherwise not deemed a threat to the country. This means that while the migrants are not granted or denied asylum — their cases are “terminated without a decision on the merits of their asylum claim” — they are removed from the legal system and no longer required to check in with authorities.

🏀WNBA CLARK HAS BECOME A TARGET ON THE COURT:
Cailin Clark was expecting a more physical game when she transitioned to the WNBA. In some cases, though, Clark has been the subject of what could be flagrant fouls. An instance in Indiana's win over Chicago on Saturday is a prime example: Sky guard Chennedy Carter and Clark exchanged words following a Fever possession when Clark got a rebound over her.

After Carter made a midrange shot on the next possession, she went to guard Clark on the inbound and shoulder-checked the Fever rookie to the ground. "I wasn't expecting that," Clark said. "But it's just, 'Respond, calm down and let your play do the talking.' It is what it is.” The WNBA confirmed Sunday morning that Carter’s foul against Clark has been upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after league review.Despite Fever players' call for a review during the game, Carter was not assessed a technical or flagrant foul. She was charged with an away-from-the-ball common foul, which resulted in one free throw for the Fever and possession. Clark made that free throw, and the Fever ended up winning by one point, 71-70.
