Philly Radio: WMMR Collects 1.7M Pounds of Food + $948K+

Beasley Media Group’s 93.3 WMMR-FM proudly announces the 26th Annual Preston & Steve Camp Out For Hunger event raised over 1.7 million pounds of food and over $948,732 dollars cash to benefit needy individuals and families. Camp Out for Hunger proceeds directly benefit local hunger relief organizations through Philabundance – The Delaware Valley’s largest hunger relief organization, which acquires, rescues, and distributes food to help feed those in need, while also advocating for policies that increase food access.

Beginning at 6am on Monday, November 13th through 11am Friday, November 17th, 2023, morning personalities Preston and Steve camped out and broadcast live outside of Xfinity Live!, located within the Wells Fargo Center Complex in South Philadelphia, in an effort to collect food and monetary donations from listeners and businesses throughout the tri-state area.

Dozens of local and national celebrities, performers, and athletes were on hand all week to lend their support, including TV personality Carson Kressley, Philadelphia Eagles D’Andre Swift & Boston Scott, Flyers GM Danny Brierre, comedian Big Jay Oakerson, Daughtry, John O’Hurley, local TV anchors shooting mini hoops in Preston & Steve’s Camp Out for Hunger Games, additional, daily, live broadcasts from WMMR air talents Pierre Robert, Brent Porche and Jacky Bam Bam.  Camp Out After Dark night time events featured Food Trucks and Fireworks complete with amusement rides, a full games arcade and for the 1st time included a Preston & Steve lighted drone show. Other nights included Camp Out Quizzo, Movie Night under the Stars and Free T-shirt night.

The event also featured live music performances from different house bands each morning along with special performances from The Hooters, Don McClosky Band and The Philadelphia No-Name Pops Orchestra.  Morning show stunts included the new Jawn-stical Course– with contestants racing against time to throw snowball (cupcakes) at Santa, save winter-time parking spaces, running the Rocky Steps, and giving their all in the Eagles Tush-Push (picture attached).  A warm-up event on Sunday before Camp Out Week, The Phil-A-Trunk Car Shiow, featured nearly 3500 cars arriving on-site with individual food donations.

All listeners were invited into the broadcast tent to watch the show live. Donors and volunteers loading the food were treated to free Dunkin coffee in the morning, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the day from event sponsors. Online donations were accepted at wmmr.com, and listeners could donate in-store at their local ACME Market upon checkout.

Subaru of America provided the largest donation from a business, 672,704 pounds of food, earning the company a live Preston & Steve broadcast from their headquarters in Camden, New Jersey.

“There’s not a single event that even comes close to this level of collaboration.  Add to that the results of Camp Out for Hunger,” said WMMR Program Director, Bill Weston.  “The generosity of our listeners, clients and sponsors is humbling. This was an amazing week of local, community-driven, and entertaining radio.”
