Wake-Up Call: Russia On The Run


UKRAINE RETAKES MORE TERRITORY, CLAIMS MANY RUSSIAN PRISONERS OF WAR:
Ukrainian forces retook another wide swath of territory from Russian occupation yesterday, getting all to way to the northeastern border in some places as part of their ongoing counteroffensive. Ukrainian military intelligence claimed many Russian prisoners of war were surrendering because, quote, "they understand the hopelessness of their situation." Ukraine's military claimed it freed more than 20 settlements in 24 hours. In Kharkhiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, power and water was restored to about 80 percent of the population after Russian attacks on infrastructure led to blackouts.


✞QUEEN ELIZABETH'S BODY MOVED IN PROCESSION TO SCOTTISH CATHEDRAL: The flag-draped coffin of Queen Elizabeth the Second was moved to St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland, from the city's Palace of Holyrood house yesterday. The late queen's four children, including King Charles the Third, walked behind the hearse along a crowd-lined street and later stood in silent vigil in the cathedral. The queen will lie in state tomorrow at London's Westminster Abbey. The state funeral will be held on Monday.


➤TRUMP TEAM DISMISSES DOCUMENTS SEIZURE AS A ‘STORAGE DISPUTE’: Lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department have said they would agree to a name put forward by lawyers for former President Donald J. Trump for a special master to review classified documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. The former president’s lawyers rejected the Justice Department’s suggestions. In a court filing, the Trump team asserted that the government had not proven that the documents were classified and dismissed the whole investigation as a “storage dispute.”
 

➤JANUARY 6TH INVESTIGATION GAINS STEAM: The Justice Department has issued about 40 subpoenas to allies and aides of former President Trump in the past week alone as it steps up its investigation into his role in the attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, The New York Times reported. These latest subpoenas focus on attempts to submit an alternate slate of electors.


➤BROOKLYN MOM SUSPECTED OF DROWNING 3 CHILDREN: A Brooklyn mom is suspected of drowning her three young children on a city beach. According to The New York Post, Erin Merdy, of Coney Island, was found wandering “in a dazed condition” on the beach at 1 a.m. yesterday. Her children were found nearby. They were ages 7, 4, and three months.

➤JEFF BEZOS’ ROCKET BLOWS UP: A rocket ship owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos burst into flames at 29,000 feet just after its launch in west Texas yesterday. No passengers were aboard. A capsule on top of the rocket, where passengers would ordinarily sit, detached and parachuted safely to the ground. The Bezos-owned company Blue Origin hopes to develop a space tourism industry. The accident will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.


🛫COSTLY HOLIDAY TRAVEL AHEAD: Ticket prices for this year’s end-of-year holiday season will be at their highest level in five years, according to the fare-tracking site Hopper. Higher jet fuel prices, fewer scheduled flights, and pent-up travel demand were blamed.

🚘GASOLINE PRICES CONTINUE TO DROP: The average price of a gallon of gas has dropped by 25 percent since it peaked in June, according to AAA. The nationwide price was $3.74 as of last Friday. Even better, wholesale prices are still dropping, suggesting lower prices coming soon.


➤STUDY: SHOT HAILED AS GAME-CHANGER FOR WEIGHT LOSS:  Research from the University of Alabama might be a weight loss game-changer! A weekly shot of semaglutide helped patients lose an average of 37 pounds and cut diabetes risk by 50%. "We have not seen this degree of weight loss with any previous medication," author Dr. Timothy Garvey said. Some participants lost up to 20% of their body weight. This could provide a less invasive alternative to bariatric surgery. "If approved, semaglutide 2.4 milligrams has the potential to really change the way we think about treating this disease of obesity," Dr. Garvey added.


🏈COWBOYS’ PRESCOTT IS OUT FOR WEEKS:
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will be out for weeks after fracturing a bone in his throwing hand. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’ll need surgery and is expected to be out for several weeks but not the whole season.

🏈T.J. WATT’S RETURN UNCERTAIN: Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker T.J. Watt is getting a second opinion and a third opinion from doctors on the torn pectoral he sustained during the team’s 23-20 overtime victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. If he doesn’t need surgery, he could be back in six weeks. If he does, he’s out for the season, ESPN reports.

🏈PATRIOTS’ QB JONES HOPES TO PLAY SUNDAY: New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is hoping to play in this Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He underwent a series of tests after experiencing back spasms in Sunday’s season opening loss against the Miami Dolphins, but he said he’s now feeling better and ready to play.

🏈ELIJAH MITCHELL OUT FOR TWO MONTHS: San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell is expected to be out for two months after suffering a knee injury during the 49ers’ 19-10 loss to the Chicago Bears, ESPN reports.

🏈NOTRE DAME’S BUCHNER TAKES A FALL: Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to be out for the rest of the season after suffering a “significant sprain” to the AC joint in his left shoulder in Saturday’s 26-21 home loss to Marshall’s Thundering Herd. He’ll need surgery and the recovery time is about four months. Drew Pyne will take over as the starter.

🏀ANTHONY EDWARDS IS ‘INCREDIBLY SORRY’: Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards said he is “incredibly sorry” for posting an Instagram video showing him mocking a group of four men with a homophobic slur. Before the day was out he posted a tweet apologizing and calling his own words “immature, hurtful, and disrespectful.” The NBA has a history of fining players for using bad language.
