R.I.P.: Longtime Chattanooga Personality Tommy Jett

Tommy Jett, the man known as "TJ the DJ" to thousands of radio-listening fans, has died at the age of 77. At the time of his death, he was still spinning records, both on the radio and online.

Thomas Wayne "Tommy Jett" Reynolds was born July 26, 1940. He first went over the radio waves in 1961, and became well known during the afternoon drive time on Chattanooga's WFLI.

Jett began his career in Chattanooga in 1961 at WFLI 1070 AM. He was on the air somewhere locally for 57 years. He also took his show on the road, playing weddings, dances and parties during that time.

He was known for his big gold glasses, rings on every finger and his trademark "Hey Now!" greeting.

Ben Cagle, a family friend, says Tommy was a part of a history in Chattanooga that shaped radio.

Cagle says he and Tommy had a friendship that lasted close to 50 years, and that he and Tommy were like brothers.  Cagle says, "There is no one in Chattanooga during that time who doesn't know who Tommy Jett is."

Tommy Jett was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame in 2013.

The South Crest Chapel and Lane Funeral Home in Rossville, Georgia will be handling the arrangements.
