Austin Radio: KLBJ's Sgt. Sam Cox To Retire This Month

Sam Cox
Longtime Austin radio personality Sgt. Sam Cox will retire at the end of the month.

Cox, part of the morning show on NewsRadio KLBJ 590 AM / 99.7 FM, has been with the station for nearly three decades.

“For 28 years, Austinites have known they can wake up and drive to work getting heartfelt and no-punches-pulled analysis and commentary from the perspective of a man who has served this community with honor,” said Scott Gillmore, market manager for Emmis Austin Radio, NewsRadio KLBJ’s owner.

“We’ll miss him on our airwaves, but we wish Sam Cox the best and we have no doubts that his service to our community will continue.”

In addition to his radio career, Cox spent 31 years as an Austin police officer, joining the force in 1964. Three of those years, he served as president of the Austin Police Association.

He later joined the Texas Department of Transportation, where he helped create highway courtesy patrols.

Austin360.com reports Cox’s last day on NewsRadio KLBJ will be July 31.
