Houston Radio: GM Doug Abernathy Departing Radio One

Doug Abernathy
Veteran radio executive Doug Abernethy, Radio One's Houston general manager for 11 years, will leave the company at the end of the month for a position at Entercom Communications, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Abernethy, who was responsible in Houston for stations KBXX 97.9 FM, KMJQ 102.1 FM and KROI 92.1 FM, said he will remain with Radio One through the end of the month. He said no successor has been named.

Abernethy worked for Cox Radio in Houston for four years before joining Radio One, which specializes in urban formats.

Abernethy also presided over the News 92 FM launch at KROI that was dropped last year for Boom 92, a classic hip-hop format. He said the failure of the news station was a major disappointment during his Houston tenure.

He said revenue for 92.1 FM is up by more than 70 percent year-to-year since the format switch.

Entercom's only Texas market is Austin, and the company owns stations in such far-flung points as Boston and Portland, so Abernethy said his new role will require frequent travel.
