Tom Brokaw Says Cancer Is In Remission

Tom Brokaw
"A year ago my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news," Brokaw, who anchored "NBC Nightly News" from 1982 to 2004, wrote Sunday in a note to NBC News staff.

He said that he will soon begin a drug regimen to keep the cancer in remission. Brokaw, 74, revealed in February that he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that attacks bone marrow.

Brokaw, who remains an NBC News special correspondent, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November. Last week, he took part in the sing-along finale of "The Colbert Report."

In the note to staff, he wrote about serving as a presidential delegate earlier this month to a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Brokaw is credited with coining the term "The Greatest Generation."
