Miami Radio: Revenue On Rollercoaster

While TV has not been so healthy in Miami this year, radio has been strong with first-quarter spending up high-single-digit percentages and second quarter spending about flat to 2013, according to medialifemagazine.com.

Radio is pacing down about 2-3 percent for third quarter, but the market remains active with many advertisers coming in at the last minute. And fourth quarter is already pacing ahead of 2013.

As usual, morning and afternoon drive times are the most in demand, while evenings and weekends have room for negotiation.

Political will play a role on radio in the market as well, although spending won’t be near the level for TV and will be mainly on news-talk stations.

The Miami radio scene is competitive.

In August 17 stations in the market posted at least a 3.0 average quarter-hour share among total listeners, according to Nielsen Audio portable people meters.

The usual leader is Cox Radio-owned urban adult contemporary station WHQT-FM, which was No. 1 again in August with a 7.7 AQH share. Adult contemporary station WLYF-FM was a distant second during the month with a 6.2 AQH share.
