VA Radio: Two Classical Stations To Go Silent

Classical music station WWED–FM 89.5 will go off the air by Aug. 1, according to fredricksburg.com.

The independent non-commercial, nonprofit station in Spotsylvania County will continue as a webcast on ClassicsRadio.org, as will sister station WWEM–FM 91.7 in Lynchburg.

WWED and WWEM are owned and operated by Educational Media Corporation. General manager Pete Stover cited lack of financial support in the Fredericksburg and Lynchburg areas as the reason the stations will no longer be on the radio.

Both solicit donations on ClassicsRadio.org and the ClassicsRadio Facebook page. The monthly operating budget for the 24-hour non-commercial all-classical music format webcast is $10,000, according to the website.

WWED officially launched in 2005, and tried several different formats, including praise and worship, gospel, bluegrass and contemporary Christian. WWED and WWEM, which are simulcast, switched to a classical music format in February of 2012.
