ESPN Radio To Celebrate Opening of New Studios

In 1992, ESPN Radio began broadcasting in a booth not much bigger than a closet.

Next week, the sports media giant will debut an expanded, state-of-the-art radio facility at its Bristol, CT  headquarters, including the addition of seven control rooms, two studios and two news booths.

According to a story by Kenneth Gosselin at courant.com, the radio facility now will occupy 8,000 square feet, an entire floor in Building 2, making the new space one-and-a-half times larger than what it was previously, ESPN said late Friday. Construction in Building 2, where ESPN Radio got its start nearly two decades ago, began in August. ESPN declined to comment on costs.

ESPN is expanding its radio operations as its moves beyond reaching its audience just over the radio. ESPN Radio is adding to its digital delivery, podcasts and Spanish-language offerings.

The new facility will be unveiled June 1 when ESPN will host 13 radio affilitates and four other owned-and-operated stations from across the country. The stations are in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas.
