👉When listening to ad-supported audio, Americans are spending more than three times longer with the radio than with podcasts, according to “The Record”, new data from Nielsen and Edison Research. However, for younger listeners (18-34), time spent with podcasts and radio are nearly equal, at 37% vs 45%.


👉Podcast ad spending climbed 29% year-on-year in Q1/24, according to a new report from Magellan AI. The free report also covers details of which categories are growing, how genres compare in ad load, and the most common place for ads in episodes.


👉In London, podcast production house Viral Tribe has acquired Soho Radio and its podcast business, SRP Studios. Terms weren’t given; SRP Studios are used by a number of large clients including the BBC, Stephen Fry and Gillian Anderson.


👉SiriusXM released its Q1/24 financial earnings. The numbers are down for satellite radio and for Pandora; but Chris Peterson looks at the numbers from a podcast point of view, and discovers a bright lining: podcast revenue was up 22% year-on-year, and programmatic podcast revenue has almost doubled

👉Three US presidents are united on an episode of SmartLess available today. Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes were joined by Presidents Biden, Obama and Clinton in New York City. The episode was available early on Amazon Music and Wondery+. The show switches to SiriusXM later this year.


👉In the UK, the True Crime Awards took place. The BBC’s Vishal took two awards for Best Podcast Community and Impact for Change. We’ve a list of all the winners.


👉RedCircle has seen a 38% growth in downloads since announcing OpenRAP, a scalable technology for host-read ads.


👉A BBC presenter has had her likeness cloned for an ad for insect repellant. The advertiser appears to have been the target of a scam.

👉BackBeat Media and Blubrry are working together for premium host-read ads. Blubrry will offer its users access to premium, personalized advertising opportunities through the BackBeat Media network.


👉TWiT is to close its studios in Petaluma in the next six months, Leo Laporte said in Macbreak Weekly. “Every little bit counts,” he said, referencing the environmental benefits. ”Our 15 employees won’t be driving all the way to Petaluma anymore. They will be staying home.” TWiT made staff layoffs late last year.


👉The New York Times looks at “the crisis at NPR”. The growth of NPR’s podcast business is cited as a source of tension with member stations.Boston’s NPR station WBUR is to reduce its staffing levels by 30, the station’s CEO announced.


👉Podchaser has launched a new section of the site called Podcast Charts & Rankings, which shows the Apple and Spotify podcast charts from across the world.


👉In The Dark London and Transmission Roundhouse are looking for submissions for a listening event to be held in London in August. They’re looking for “new” - new creators and producers, or new styles from established producers. There’s a small payment, and the chance to get your audio heard by new and interesting people. Submissions close on May 17.

👉What is the future of podcasting on YouTube? Johanna Voolich, Chief Product Officer of YouTube, is interviewed by Rene Ritchie (and her conversation is written up in the company’s blog.) She describes the company’s vision of podcasting on the platform being an “eyes optional” experience; and confirms that YouTube does not plan to publish RSS feeds. She does, though, look suspiciously as if she knows a little more than she can say, when talking about whether YouTube might augment audio-only podcasts with AI visuals of its own.


👉Acast is celebrating its tenth birthday today, with a number of video messages from podcasters, and events across the world. We’ve a few of the videos on our website. The company was recently highlighted by Podtrac as the world’s largest podcast company.


👉IAB UK has published its Digital Adspend Report for 2023. The report is behind a login wall, but Adelicious report that it says podcast advertising in the country grew 23% year-on-year to £83mn (US $103mn). Digital audio as a whole grew 12% to £176mn ($218mn).
