Fox Newsroom Brawl, Anchor Treated

Co-workers come to blows at Fox Charlotte

An office dispute turned physical this week at the Fox Charlotte television studios, sending anchorman Brien Blakely to the emergency room.

According to the charlotterobserver.com, a news producer was also involved in the altercation, which occurred before the Tuesday night newscast at the WCCB (Channel 18) building on Television Place, across from Bojangles' Coliseum.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they were called to the studios to investigate a report of a fight, only to find Blakely on his way to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of injuries and the producer headed home.

Blakely, 47, who said he cut his nose when he fell over a desk during the scuffle, did not return for the Tuesday night newscast, and neither man was working in the newsroom Wednesday.

No charges were immediately filed.

Blakely, who joined the station in 2005, said he confronted the co-worker over an office issue that he would not disclose. "I was protecting the honor and integrity of our station," Blakely said. The two men then came to blows in an office outside the station's newsroom.

"These things happen," he said Wednesday. "It's over. We're buddies again."

Fox Charlotte managers were talking to those involved and others on duty Tuesday night, but had no comment on the incident. "We do not comment on personnel matters," said John Hutchinson, vice president of television for Charlotte-based Bahakel Communications, WCCB's parent company.
